On my last job i didn t even take it off my truck s lumber rack.
Put header in for garage door.
I don t want to move one of these beams around any more than i have to.
The parallam beams used as headers atop simpson garage door walls are heavy.
The king studs nailed into the end of each header and the trimmers that butt just under the header combine to create a sturdy vertical support column.
Header requirement 2 at minimum the header should be 12 wide with doubled 2 4 at opening and ceiling running the width of the door with a 2 4 in the center of the opening for the center bracket to attach to.
This header should be an inch and a half higher than the garage door and 9 inches wider than the door.
Carefully measure the length of your door as the header must be at least 9 inches longer than that and at least 1 1 2 inches higher than the door.
The standard headroom for garage doors is 12 inches.
Lay a single piece of the 1 inch by 11 inch lumber cut in.
Cut three pieces of 1 inch by 11 inch lumber to the width measurement of the garage door rough opening plus 12.
Take some 2x4 s and use these to add 3 rows of supporting frames around the sides of the door and just below the header.
Go to your local building office and ask about the dimensions of the garage door header.
Header the header is ideally a minimum 12 wide micro laminated beam that spans the width of the garage door opening.
Attach lumber to the face of the garage wall to the edge of the garage door header 7.
They are typically 31 2 in.
Push the new header into place.
Rip 11 inch wide strips of inch plywood using a circular saw.
This allows the header to take the weight of your wall.
If you are only opening the door manually that is enough headroom.
Deep by 22 ft.
Last pull a measurement from the top of the 2 x 6 piece of lumber that you just installed to the ceiling of the garage.
These will help to support the new garage door header.
Wide by 16 in.
