Put Tarp Over Roof

Let the rest of the tarp hang off the lower border of the roof that overhangs the wall known as the eave.

Positions several 1 2 pieces of lumber on the tarp running vertically down the slope of the roof. Unfold the tarp on the roof. Extend the top edge of the tarp over the ridge of the roof. Partially unroll your tarp to cover the damaged area from the roof s eaves to peak.

Wrap the tarp three or four times around the wood then secure the wood to the soffit or the roof deck on the side of the peak opposite the side that is leaking. Never lay the tarp out during a storm. While tarping a roof with nailshas its advantages the process can be a little unwieldy for those who are inexperienced with roofing jobs. Create an anchor board by rolling the tarp s peak end with a 2 x 4 inch board and nailing the tarp to your board with your 3 inch nails.

A tarp can save you from a leaky roof situation in more ways than one and the process becomes much easier if you can do away with nails. If you don t have a helper use the metal rings to hold down the tarp at the furthest four corners. If you have a helper this part is easy. Lay the tarp flatly over the damaged area and make sure there are at least 4 feet of it overhanging past the roof s peak and the rest over the eave.

Lay the tarp out flat over the roof. Lay the tarp across the roof so that at least 4 feet 1 2 m lies on the sloped part of your roof on each side known as the peak. Pull the other end of the tarp over the peak and down the roof far enough to cover the leak then secure that end to another 2 by 4. Screw the 2 by 4 directly into the roof to secure it. If required cut plywood as needed cover up any existing penetrations with plywood secure the perimeter with screws every 6 to 12 into the roof sheathing below preferably into trusses unroll the full tarp make sure that the length extends 1 past the edge of the roof on the damaged side. There should be an additional 4 feet of tarp on every side.

Pull away from each other until the tarp is fully unrolled. Then fold the excess tarp under a few rotations for a tight clean fit. Shop the tools and materials used in this video. Lay more 2 by 4s on either side of the tarp and attach those as well for a tight well secured water barrier.

Try to pick a day that is not windy or else you may face frustration because as soon as you open the tarp up there it will start blowing all over the place.
